What’s The Problem?

Problem statement

There is currently a decoupling of education and work opportunities in Khartoum exacerbated by a lack of vocational training.

Background

The poverty and unemployment rates in Khartoum are extremely high. Young people make up almost half of the population, and 85% of them are unemployed. Although there are higher education institutions in Khartoum, 90% of people who receive degrees cannot secure employment - they are not trained in the skills needed to work in the local context. There is a complete absence of vocational training, and therefore a high need for tradespeople in the community. Educating the many un- and underemployed people in relevant skills to obtain work could reduce poverty, build the local economy, and develop the entrepreneurial space. The increase in income-generating skills will eliminate barriers to adopting sustainable practices.

What’s The Idea?

Our vision is to create a free and open local learning hub that fosters an environment where the young adults of Khartoum can learn various vocational skills that are sorely needed by the local community. This hub would leverage technology and the wealth of educational content available online to facilitate virtual learning, enabling maximal educational impact with minimal investment. In addition, the learning content provided will mostly be in English, as improving English skills has been identified as a top priority. The mission is to develop entrepreneurial skills in order to give individuals agency over their economic outcomes.
