🚨 2021 saw a 3.3% increase in Green House Gas Emissions (GHGE) in the City of Toronto post the 2020 pandemic-related plunge. While transportation is responsible for 36% of the total GHGE in the City of Toronto, 80% is contributed from personal vehicles [1]. A green recovery from the pandemic is crucial to not revert to pre-pandemic levels of CO2 emissions [2].

At an individual level Climate Action can seem very daunting amidst a busy lifestyle of the average student/working population.
78% of Toronto residents expressed concern about climate change and its effects, with 50% of the residents expressing a lack knowledge on how to address climate change and 25% expressing outright helplessness [3]. Apart from convenience and lack of interest, cost is a major barrier to climate action [3], which we perceive is particularly true for low-income Scarborough residents.

🛠 Our solution is a Carbon Footprint display added on to pre-existing virtual map applications (such as Google maps, Apple Maps and Waze). It shows an indication of the user’s carbon footprint for different transit options, along with a color coded bar (red to green: most intensive to least intensive carbon emissions)

It offers personalized climate awareness, a daily reminder and prompt for impactful climate action at an individual level and provides a summary of the footprint and transit trends.
To maintain equity in Climate Action, incentivization program will be piloted in a low income neighborhood in Scarborough, redeemable for essentials.
A snapshot of our proposed feature.
Technical and Financial feasibility: The feature is added to pre-existing technology. No additional data is needed. The Carbon Footprint is known. (in g/km for modes of transport)
Environmentally friendly: Promotes use of public transit.
Socially Acceptable: Provides an actionable ‘feel-good’ way to climate action.

👐 Due to intellectual and time constraints we don’t have all the knowledge to implement this solution. We do not know for certain whether the tech companies will want to finance the idea. Currently, we also do not know the cost of conducting the pilot in Scarborough
