The suburb of River Heights, with over 55,000 residents, lacks an organic waste collection and composting process. Contributing significantly to the 2-3 million kilograms of organic waste piled at the nearby Brady Road Resource Management Facility (Rutgers, 2022). Our goal is to propose a sustainable solution under Sustainability Goal 11.6, aiming for 60-70% composting of organic waste generated in River Heights and surrounding areas. This initiative aligns with Winnipeg's target to increase its waste diversion rate from 33% to 55-65% by 2030 (Rutgers, 2022).

Team 1-e is proposing the implementation of a composting facility for River Heights located at the Brady Road Resource Management Facility located approximately 17km away. Windrow composting will take place at this facility to manage different amounts and varieties of organic waste. The main product from this facility is compost which will be sold to the public for agricultural use or home gardening. In return for the correct disposal of organic waste, properly degraded compost will be made available for CAD 50 per tonne. The initial capital cost of the composting facility will be CAD 14.5 million. The facility will have many stages of implementation, starting with a facility that produces compost and potentially followed by anaerobic digestion or fermentation facilities once the collection is offered city-wide and if the funding allows it.
There are many uncertainties in proposing a composting facility as a solution for the River Heights suburb. Some key assumptions and uncertainties are listed below:
