As discussed in our Design Brief [1]:
‘A lack of bus stop accessibility can present barriers to potential bus route users, creating inequitable opportunities to access public transportation affecting elderly people, persons living with a disability, and low-income families. The Malvern community in Scarborough has a median total household income of approximately $10,000 less than the City of Toronto average [1]. However, Malvern residents also use public transportation 4% less and use personal vehicles 12% more than the City average [2]. The purpose of this study is to determine how the accessibility of TTC bus stops in Malvern can be improved, thus encouraging the use of public transportation and creating more equitable opportunities’.
Our target audience is primarily elderly and disabled. However, since the majority of Malvern is made up of low-income families, improving bus stops can be beneficial to all of these stakeholders.
