<aside> 🔥 Buildings and transportation are the largest sources of carbon emissions at 42.8% and 33.8%, respectively, within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) (Boisvert, 2021).
Areas such as Scarborough North and Scarborough Agincourt consists of many young working population that heavily rely on public transportation such as Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and Metrolinx GO Transit. However, these communities are transit desert areas as per Martin Prosperity Institute’s data where Scarborough has an average transit score of 20.97 compared to Toronto’s score of 66.5 (Waberi, 2019). Due to the inaccessible and inefficient public transit in the area, the working population in Scarborough must resort to more costly alternatives, such as private vehicles, that also have higher environmental footprint. Thus, there is a need for a scalable, eco-friendly system that can improve the transportation equity within the less-serviced community.
<aside> 🔑 We propose a joint project for the creation of a Transit Hub pilot by leveraging the expertise of various stakeholders and resources from existing programs to facilitate the trial of a scalable Hub design and construction framework that meet the demands of local commuters, and ensure this with an active feedback system.
The Transit Hub design seeks to attract ridership and build confidence in Toronto’s public transport system and ultimately provide a framework for incorporating green construction practices that can be extended into transit desert communities.

One of the uncertainties of the proposed Transit Hub is the technicalities of incorporating the electricity charging stations into the design. Utilizing the expertise of companies such PowerON and Toronto Hydro allowed for the implementation of the charging stations which will be used to maintain electric buses (eBuses). In addition, there is an uncertainty regarding how the fares and passes will be affected due to the new addition of the Hubs. The proposed solution will lead to a long-term revenue, but the short-term affects are not as transparent.
